Ocular Surface Evaluation

OCULAR SURFACE EVALUATION

Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye Syndrome cannot be effectively treated without an Ocular Surface Evaluation. At Kings Peak Vision, we harness cutting-edge technology to conduct a thorough examination of your tear film, eyelids, ocular surface, and meibomian glands. This comprehensive assessment is essential to create a personalized treatment strategy tailored to your unique needs.

Our in-depth testing encompasses the following components:

Patient History

The evaluation starts with a detailed discussion of the patient's medical history, including any preexisting eye conditions, medications, and environmental factors.

Symptom Questionnaire

Patients are asked to complete a questionnaire that assesses the severity and impact of their dry eye symptoms on their daily activities and quality of life.

Lipid Interferometry

Evaluating the quality of the lipid layer of the tear film and oil produced by the meibomian glands.

Tear Film Stability

The stability of the mucin layer and entire tear film is assessed and mapped on the entire cornea determining if tears are evaporating faster than normal.

Tear Production Tests

The thickness, volume, height, and regularity of the tears on the eyelid margins is evaluated. Various tests may be conducted to measure tear production, such as Schirmer's test, which assesses the quantity of tears produced over a specific time.

Blink Quality

Blink frequency and efficiency is analyzed which plays an important role in ocular surface health.

Meibography

Infrared imaging is used to visualize the meibomian glands and assess their health and function. These specialized oil glands play a crucial role in maintaining the health and stability of the tear film, which covers the surface of the eye and keeps it moist.

After gathering the above data, we will discuss the findings, including how to manage it effectively and answer any questions or concerns. Based on the evaluation findings, Kings Peak Vision will develop a tailored management plan. This may include lifestyle recommendations, dietary changes, prescribed artificial tears, anti-inflammatory medications, warm compresses, lid hygiene, other therapies like punctal plugs, Lipiflow treatment, or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy for meibomian gland dysfunction.

All results gathered during the evaluation and treatment suggestions will be available on a phone app to reference at any time.

Ocular surface and dry eye evaluations are crucial for diagnosing the condition accurately and developing a personalized treatment plan to improve eye comfort and overall quality of life for individuals affected by dry eye syndrome.
